Commonplace animals often have two kinds of names: a Germanic name and a French (or Latin) name.
Les animaux familiers ont souvent deux sortes de noms: un nom d'origine germanique et un nom d'origine française (ou latine).
These domestic animals have a French name when they are dead and ready to be eaten:
Ces animaux domestiques ont un nom français lorsqu'ils sont prêts à être mangés:

✓ Caribou Creek (many U.S. States) means 'moose creek'. Loup River (Nebraska) means 'wolf river'. Bayou L'Ours (Louisiana) means 'bear bayou'. Rat de Bois (Louisiana) means 'wood rat' or 'opossum'. Corbeau Creek (New York) means 'crow creek'. La Grue Bayou (Arkansas) means 'crane bayou'.

These animal names have an interesting story:
